Rep. Michael Meredith, the main sponsor of HB 551, tells lawmakers the bill would regulate something that is already happening in Kentucky. He says Kentuckians are either crossing state borders to bet legally or are using illegal, off-shore sites to place bets.

Passing in the Senate is the challenge for this bill. As of late last week, they did not have the votes there. But they’re close.

A percentage of the revenue would go into a fund focused on dealing with problem gambling. I think this will help close the deal......

The leftover revenue after that would flow into the state public pension system.

hope the state allows them to bet on kentucky college sports, if not they be missing a whole hell lot of sales. In illinois no action on northwestern or Illinois college sports, so weak.

Skoda you're in Kentucky right?
Lexington switched from Harness to Thorobreds. Bluegrass State came from the State of Confusion (Pa.) Most beautiful State I’ve been in has everything except Legal sports betting! Looking like it could happen before before 2024…

FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — A bill to legalize sports betting in Kentucky won final legislative approval Thursday, clearing the last hurdle in the Senate after days of uncertainty over whether backers could muster enough support.

With only hours left in this year's legislative session, the Republican-dominated Senate passed the measure 25-12, sending it to Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear, who has supported the issue.

Under the bill, the Kentucky Speedway and horse racing tracks could pay a fee to operate as sports betting facilities, with bets allowed there and on licensed websites and phone apps.

If signed by Beshear, Kentucky would become the 38th state to legalize sports betting, with the law going into effect in late June.

We are a sports crazy state," Thayer said. "And people want to be able to make a choice of their own free will to make a wager on a sports event — like almost all our surrounding states."

"I look forward to Kentuckians being able to place their wagers right here in the commonwealth instead of traveling across state lines to spend their money in other states," Thayer said.
